Genetics are a big part of why people are who they are. When it comes to the realm of family law, a question was posed regarding whether there is a link between genetics and divorce. According to a recent study, the answer is yes. Some Ohio residents may be programmed in their DNA to divorce.
It may sound crazy, but is it? It has been long believed that children who grow up with divorced parents are more likely to get divorces themselves. Is it because that is all they know, or does it go deeper than that?
According to the American Psychological Association, 40 to 50 percent of marriages end in divorce. There is some debate on those numbers, but for the most part it is safe to say that quite a few marriages fail to thrive. In a study looking at the effects of divorce on adopted children rather than a couple’s biological children, researchers say that there is sufficient evidence that suggests genetics rather than environment play a key role in whether the children will themselves get divorces later in life.
It certainly is an interesting notion; one that could change how divorce is approached. It may also change how marriage counselors work with couples who are trying to fix the issues before calling it quits.
