Ohio family law: Child support Q and A, part I

Divorcing couples in Ohio who have children are likely to have a lot of questions regarding how child support works. This can be a complicated family law subject to tackle, as every child's needs are different and every parent's individual situation is unique. However, this column will go over two common questions that parents may have regarding basic child support guidelines.

The first question that will be discussed is: How is child support calculated in Ohio? Like other states, courts in Ohio determine a child support amount based on the incomes of both parents and the number of children requiring support. Looking at these two things, a starting amount can be determine. This number may not be what is eventually ordered, though, as other factors will also need to be considered before the final payment amount is set.

The second question that will be discussed is: How does child care and insurance fit into child support? These are a few of those other factors previously mentioned. The parent paying for child care and insurance will be given credit for providing these things which will affect the final support amount that is ordered.

Obviously, there are various other questions that parents in Ohio may have regarding child support. Many more will be addressed by this column over the next several weeks. Those who would like more detailed information about this topic now can seek assistance from an experienced family law attorney. With help, it is possible to achieve support orders that meet the needs of the affected children.
