Surgical error could constitute medical malpractice

If you are like many people, you probably want to spend as little time as possible in the care of medical professionals. Accordingly it makes sense that whenever possible, you would avoid unnecessary surgical procedures. This is at least in part due to the fact that any operation carries with it a certain degree of risk.

In some situations the risk is necessary however and most likely assume that the individuals who will be involved in the procedure will live up to the standard of care expected of doctors and nurses. Unfortunately this is not always the case and all too often patients suffer at the hands of their surgeons experiencing issues such as scarring, instruments left in the body, errors with anesthesia, problems with post-operative care and even being the recipient of the wrong surgery.

Negligence during surgery could lead to a variety of problems that carry on long after the procedure including:

  • Internal bleeding.
  • Amputation.
  • Brain damage.
  • Nerve injuries.
  • Damage to organs.
  • Paralysis.
  • Chronic pain.
  • Sepsis.

In the worst situations, a patient will die as a result of the negligence.

Following a traumatic event such as this one you may feel unsure of what to do. Depending on what happened during surgery it may be difficult to complete tasks that were once easy and medical bills could be mounting at a seemingly exponential rate. Fortunately you do have options. In some cases you may find it worthwhile to file a medical malpractice lawsuit against those responsible for your injuries or death of a loved one. When successful, compensation may be obtained for lost wages, pain and suffering and medical bills. Please see our page on surgical errors for more information.
